English as second language (ESL)
ESLクラスでは、最近ずっと、Articles(the, a, an)の勉強をやっている。いいレビューが こちらにある。ルールをまとめてみた。
- Is Noun definite(specific) or nondeinite (unspecific).
- First mention of a noun is indefinite(a, an) and all subsequen treferences to this noun is definite (the).
- Shared knowledge of the situation or context takes "the" (The Prime minister)
- Unique objects takes "the" (The sun)
- Postmodified noun takes "the" (The man who.., The jouney to... , The results that ...)
- Generic noun (いくつかいいかたがある)
- No article PLUS plural count noun. (It's astonishing waht gymnasts can do).
- No article PLUS noncount noun (Love can cause a lot of suffering).
- indefinite article PLUS singular count noun (It's astonishing what a gymnast can do).
- definite article PLUS singular count noun (It's astonishing waht the gymnast can do).
- definite article PLUS plural nationality noun (The chinise have an ancient culture).
- Media takes "the" (The newspaper)
- Means of transportation take "the" (taken on the bus)
- Forms of entertainment take "the" (I enjoy seeing the ballet.)
- Periods of time take "the". (The 1960s)
- 特殊ケースで使わないのは、direction (turn left)、activity (go to bed, go to school, in class ...)
Postmodifiedのルールなどは便利なのだが、やっぱりpostmodifiedでもunspecificな感じがするときは"a"をとることもあって、なかなか難しい。とにかく物を読むときはArticlesに注意して読むのが大事だと思う。
