Lab meeting

Originally today it was my turn to present a journal club, but fortunatelyunfortunately, it was canceled. Instead, we had two data clubs presented by Anthony/Linda and Vincenzo. (Obviously I cannot open details here).

As you might know, one of Svoboda's lab projects is to visualize long-term structural dynamics of spines and axons in vivo. I am always fascinated by the beautiful images of the comming and going of spines. However, quantification of the structural change is actually harder than it looks. Unlike LTP experiments, it is unpredictable where interesting things are going on, and probably only a small fraction of synapses would respond to a certain manipulation. It becomes to be matter of how one can pick up something important from images of thousands of moving synapses.
